 Accra Under Water Again: Heavy Rains Leave Communities Flooded and Thousands Stranded

Accra, Ghana – June 29, 2026

Heavy overnight and early morning rains have caused severe flooding across several parts of Accra, leaving homes submerged, roads impassable, and residents stranded as the capital once again battles one of its most persistent challenges. Major routes, including sections of the N1 Highway, Spintex, Mallam, Achimota, Kaneshie, Adabraka, and the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange, experienced heavy flooding and traffic gridlock, disrupting economic activities and daily life across the city.

The image of residents wading through muddy floodwaters reflects the growing human cost of Accra's annual flooding crisis. Families have been forced to protect their belongings, while many commuters remain stranded as emergency services monitor affected communities.

The Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet) had earlier warned of intensified rainfall and possible localised flooding during the peak rainy season, urging residents in vulnerable areas to remain vigilant.

Experts continue to attribute the recurring floods to poor drainage systems, rapid urbanisation, indiscriminate waste disposal, and construction on waterways. Despite years of interventions, the challenge persists, renewing calls for stronger urban planning and sustainable flood-control measures.

Authorities are urging the public to avoid flooded roads and immediately call 112, Ghana's toll-free emergency number, in case of distress or disaster. As Accra recovers from yet another devastating downpour, many citizens are demanding lasting solutions rather than temporary responses to a problem that has plagued the city for decades.
